Wildly speculative talk about Asnes 21-22 lineup: Otto/FT62
Re: Wildly speculative talk about Asnes 21-22 lineup: Otto/FT62
What do you guys think about the amount of sidecut on the Otto? Won't it drag?

THAR SHE BLOWS!!! AIIIEEEEEE I'm melting down over here! AAAHHWOOOOOOGA! Holy balls I have to wait until JANUARY?! This is terrible.Roelant wrote: ↑Mon Nov 15, 2021 10:00 am20211115_155453.jpg
And voila!
I hope you will forgive the frankenbindings. I like heel risers sometimes.
I mounted them myself. Pins on balance point, used a Rottefella drill bit (drills just the right depth) and used some outdoor wood glue to seal the holes.
For info, these are 205cm and the rocker stops about 165cm from the rear, or 40cm from the tip.
Further info later
When you get the time: How pronounced is the rocker (compared to Gamme and Ingstad-- it is subtle or big) and How flexible are the tips? Stiff or wimpy?
So good looking! GO, man GO! Thanks for posting! YES!

Not sure what you mean about drag?
More sidecut will help with turning a bit, in combination with the rocker. These two will hopefully allow the ski to retain stiffer camber underfoot for kick and glide speed, as opposed to softening the ski to aid in turning.
Sometimes extra sidecut can cause a ski to be squirrely when K&G on hardpack instead of tracking true.
Re: Wildly speculative talk about Asnes 21-22 lineup: Otto/FT62
Squirrely... ok. I thought that more sidecut created drag and was therefore a bit slower than having no/less sidecut. What I mean is picture that 2d shape pushing through snow vs a parallel ski.

Oh yeah, I see what you mean. I think for our uses, in the BC, unconsolidated snow, it's going to be unnoticeable. We're not racing in tracks here.

There isn't enough snow yet here to ski, but here is some more Otto info.
Subjectively the camber of my 205cm Otto Sverdrup is stiffer than 205 cm Nansen but weaker than 210cm Combat. I'll have to figure out a way to measure this.
The rocker starts about 40cm from the tip, at this point the ski bases are 70mm wide.
Clamped together with 40mm blocks at the tips the skis show a behavior more like the ingstad than the Nansen. A stiffer central portion, the bases are in contact from the heel to in front of the snakebite.
See also : (though Woodserson uses thicker stacks of pine than I do, so this comparison is only semi valid).

Thank you Roelant! Excellent pictures!
So the tail seems to work like the Nansen/Ingstad/NATO, where it'll flex up to the heel pad, and the flex up front ends ahead of the snakebite, so overall much like the Combat NATO, but maybe not as aggressive underfoot in terms of initial camber. The rocker at 40cm from the tip is identical to my 205 Ingstads. (200 Gamme rocker at 38cm, 210 Gamme at 41cm-- so all this is inline with Asnes rocker length, it's the HEIGHT of the rocker that is the difference).
Same rocker as Ingstad
Same tail as Nansen/Ingstad/NATO
More camber underfoot than Nansen, and possibly also Ingstad as flex point is ahead of snakebite
Going to be difficult to see how this ski is much different than Ingstad other than a narrower overall profile. It'll be different but is it different enough to justify two skis?
On a completely personal level of what I want: I was hoping for less rocker than the Ingstad up front-- I wanted the shallower Gamme rocker rather than pronounced Ingstad rocker. BUT I always wanted a 200 Ingstad instead of the 205, so this might be what this ski becomes more for me, rather than a 205 Gamme.
I think you are really going to like this ski, Roelant. You're back on wax, on a ski that will be able to handle some of the steeper terrain you get into, it's going to be a smash hit, I bet! Congratulations!

I have a bunch of questions!!!!!
Will start with one-
What do you mean when you speak of the "snake bite"?

Cross-country AND down-hill skiing in the backcountry.
Unashamed to be a "cross-country type" and love skiing down-hill.

I'm quite sure i'll like them! I loved the skiing behaviour of the Nansens too, just grew highly frustrated with the waxless pattern (whereas I loved the E109 crown waxless). Regarding camber- it may be comparable to ingstad, I was able to squeeze a pair in the stor
Oh and by the way, I got them from the sports store at 80% of recommended retail price. Which is cheaper than a Fjellraven Keb jacket, or the price of 116 standard supermarket pint beers, or 58 big mac sandwiches, or 40 standard pints of local beer in a normal pub. So you get a feeling of how much stuff costs here.
I think it was a good deal for something so fresh.
