I think this is it.
The inflatable canoes I've seen are heavy, expensive, and don't look like they are comfortable to paddle due to the thickness of the tubes making you reach out too far from your body to reach water. They are good for fly in trips on shallow rocky rivers but they don't seem to have a lot of room for cargo, due to the fat tubes.
I have a folding canoe that is light, about 50 lbs. for a 15 footer, but is a PIA to set up and isn't really worth it for a day trip.
I did a trip last weekend with portages and saw two groups that were using pac rafts with double bladed paddles. They were designed for wilderness trips and races that combined overland and river travel. I think they weigh about 15 lbs. and pack small and would be practical for hiking in to remote areas.
I went to Cabelas yesterday for a pac rod and came home with two brand new royalex Old Town Trippers for $1027.00. Suggested retail is 1799.00. I've had a tripper since 1990 and have done a lot of trips with it but it's old and the gel coat is deteriorating. I havn't decided if I'll keep both of them or sell one, I could probably get 800 for it.
I just bought my third boat in two weeks. In addition to the Old Town Trippers, I got a beautifuly restored 1951 Old Town wood and canvas "Yankee" model. It looks real sweet from the pictures but it is NY and I won't get it until October. When the canoeing stoke hit this year it hit hard. I can't wait to retire. I also found the perfect fitting Tilley hat in the bargain cave at Cabelas that day I got the trippers for $ 38. I think the universe is trying to tell me to do more paddling and less swinging of the sledge hammer.
