I didn't see those Mammut pants show up in the link, but I got a pair of Mammut Scholler's a couple of years ago and I absolutely love 'em. Fit, function, design, quality, feel... perfect touring pants for me. They were certainly less than $200.00.
Not to ignore blitz's preference for natural fibers and budget... plenty of good advice given on what to look for in the wool world, and those flannel lined jeans ( fleece lined jeans are way better than flannel, if you don't absolutely object to synthetics).

Heavy wool pants are too hot for me to ski in. They aren't windproof either, I've had better luck with carharts when it's windy. My favorite pair were old military medium weight. They were loose enough that I could roll them up to my knees and they still let air flow up for ventilation. They were high waisted with a zipper fly that must be 14 inches long. They allowed me to not only adjust my underwear but my kneepads too.

High tech plastic pants a la randoskier are ghey. Heavy thick wool pants are too warm. I wear light to mid weight wool pants and ONLY these types of pants. Shoutout to fisheater the east german pants arent 100% wool but theyre very very good. Yeah, they dont block wind. If you are that pussy you cant handle a little wind in exchange for superior performance in every other condition, well, that is your thing. How hard is it to just use something that had been successful for millenia, you really want shit that pollutes the earth and may give you a few per cent more X but at the expense of Y?

Always to this day wear merino wool for first layer. Used wool pants when my leather knickers got destroyed. Wool and leather are the boss. Great stuff. TM

I realize that news emulating from people with grey matter takes awhile to reach the UP dwellers (luddites)... but the Schoeller material in the "high-tech plastic pants" that you dismiss is 63 years-old this year. Speaking of plastic what are your ski bases made out of? Itchy wool? Plastic? Really? Polluting the Earth with your ski bases? Big man, handling that southern wind you ski in, no pussy you! The top of the Upper Peeninsula of Michigan is 47º N, just a little bit south of Paris, France. You want wind? Try 67º or 71º N sometime. Norway awaits. But the mountains there might confuse you- you don't have any bumps in your locale even surpassing 2,000 feet (feet! not meters!). You can go back to your Ted Nugent albums now wanga danga danga dang, enjoy your wool and wellies.

Mark Mcmorris, the best snowboarder in the world, is from Saskatchewan. It's so flat you basically see Manitoba from Alberta. Equating skill or experience with local terrain would be a mistake. Best to post receipts if you wanna claim those things, we have a thread for that
