NNN boots for walking to trail

Post by kullaberg » Sun Feb 25, 2024 5:39 pm

I ski 4-5 times a week from my door before work. I also have a business making backpacking gear at my home, so I rarely have to drive. Doing the steep sno-mo routes and home made woodsy trails is fun and a great workout but I'm getting older and every winter get nagging injuries

So I want to split it up with more and more classic, but I do not want to drive. 15 min of steep road walking away is a good groomer set with tracks. My classic boots are scary to walk in on that approach, and it looks like I'm destroying them too. Skiing up to the trail can only be done in absolute perfect conditions with a more grippy wax than I prefer in the tracks

Are there NNN boots made for walking too? I currently walk in trail runners and sit in the snow next to trail and changing. It works, but..

I think Fisher has a line of what they call urban ski boots which are meant to be good for walking in

Alpina Alpina Walking Galoscher could be an alternative depending on the trail. The suggestion above looks like a very good alternative though depending on the trail. A pair of nice ice cleats may also work, but does not protect the boot much.

A different alternative may be Åsnes Mountain Race 48 wax/skin with a nylon kicker/short skin (or Fischer Spider 62 if that was available with skins) for the ascent. If you prefer wax it will infer extra work, at least with soft waxes if putting the skins atop of wax. It could solve the ascent, but perhaps not the descent? And the skis are heavier than the pure track skis.

The NNN plastic(y) soles are awful for walking on anything other than nice surfaces and friction on ice is very low. That part of the reason to go Xplore or NNN-BC or perhaps 75mm for Nordic/touring skates, as NNN Skate or Combi boots works well for the skating, but not for hiking to and from. Good luck.

Yes, a pair of these

All the grip you need with the hard sole and protects the bar too.

Either ones depending on conditions, and these work with almost all footwear.

Rossi and Alpina (and maybe others) both sell a "walking overboot" that is specifically for their NNN ski boots. It slips on over your ski boot and has a very grippy rubber sole and a neoprene upper. I love mine. Absolutely recommend them for anyone who forsees any walking at all in their ski boots. Buy them about a full size larger than your ski boots.
