Nice work! I have owned several pair of these merrill 3pins and unfortunately,as they aged, the glue holding the sole to the upper failed. Other. Than that, they were a great option for 3pin kick and glide. I wish merrill still made them. The only thing I can find with a similar duckbill today are whitewoods,which are available at a very good price, but not very durable and the soles on larger sizes (12 and above) won't fit in most groomed classic trails.
This lightweight 3 pin boot niche could be better served. The whole reason I got these in the first place is because I had pre-ordered a pair of Crispi Nordland Hook 75mm boots from Telemarkdown last spring. When I called last month to check on it I was told Crispi had a leather shortage and would not be making the Nordland Hook in 75mm this year. This stuff is getting frustrating coupled with the fear of a lack of future availability. In the end I'll end up hoarding different styles of 75mm boots
Just getting my stoke on for new/old lightweight boot options around the house and this sole just peeled right on off. Can't say I wasn't warned. This adhesive is old and dry as a bone. The boots are otherwise in new condition and I'm determined to make them come back to life! On to the glue thread!
Well, that sux. But not surprising. Good luck, that will be a challenging repair. I am thinking along the lines of Al in that a nordic three pin on the asnes woodies, paired with some whitewood three pin boots, would make a nice light duty offtrail combo.
I use my woodies and whitewood 3pins probably more than any of my other ski/binding combis for light duty offtrail conditions, especially in powder.
Wish I had read this thread a month ago before spending $39 on these...
I wanted an nnn boot that was more comfortable and without the race style of nearly all nnn boots today. I tried them on, flexed forward, and the sole separated.
Let me know how you make out, @wabene, although I may have to bite the bullet and try a new Russian-made Spine touring nnn and see how it fits.
@mca80 I did some poking around to see if there was a modern adhesive for this, but didn't come up with anything. The Master's is a clear contact cement intended for this purpose so I may give it a go. These boots are so light and comfortable I don't want to give up. I have skied the first boots in this thread that I put the shims on, Rainier's, but they were very long for their size. I acquired these West Wind boots, that are lighter and not as tall, a size smaller. I'm three boots into this now as I picked up a pair of West Wind's for my wife too. The boots are in new condition and the dry glue separated so easily no damage was done. I don't see why they can't be as good as new unless maybe the sole rubber is so dry it cracks. A local cobbler is also going to look at them so we will see.
