Very unhappy with NTN and looking for new (old-style) kit
Re: Very unhappy with NTN and looking for new (old-style) kit
Instead of switching back to 75mm, what about putting some of the new voile transit tts bindings on the skis? I haven't skied that style of binding, but I've heard that it's similar to 75mm hardwire bindings. Maybe someone else has experience with those.
Re: Very unhappy with NTN and looking for new (old-style) kit
I have a lot of experience with TTS -- OMG, Kreuzspitze, and now my homebrew SkiTrab version. With the long springs and a neutral pivot point they ski a lot like my old 75mm rig, but without the toe slop. However, the boots took some work to get right. I started with TXP's, then modded them to lower the cuff and remove the top buckle, then mostly F3's. I love TTS with F3's. TTS with 3-buckle TXP's is good for the resort, but too much boot for touring. The stock TXP with its 4 buckles has way too much cuff.
However, I wouldn't recommend TTS until we know what binding OP has and how much touring vs. resort skiing he does. If it's 50/50 or more in the backcountry, I do think TTS will be an improvement over any NTN binding, if he is willing to put some time into the boots... or wait until 2024.

Thanks for all the advice! I’ve got a lot of reading and research to do over the weekend now…
(As for the army advice about sympathy I also get your point… it was just a lot of money to spend on gear that wasn’t fun skiing for me.)
For all those who asked for details on my current set up, here’s a picture:

Oh, there was no real point, just humor. I always embrace the opportunity to be on the receiving end of sympathy!firnundferitg wrote: ↑Fri Dec 01, 2023 3:49 am

It's too bad you spent all that money on gear you don't like. Like others have said you may learn to love it, but you may not. Big boots aren't for everyone, especially if you're not interested in going fast. I would have suggested upgrading your skis for a starter, that may have been all you needed to be happy. The T2 and switchback binding would be good choices if you decide to stick with 75mm.

This set up may not be for you, but it's not NTN.firnundferitg wrote: ↑Fri Dec 01, 2023 3:49 amThanks for all the advice! I’ve got a lot of reading and research to do over the weekend now…

I feel your pain, I'm in the same situation. I had an old pair of G3 Targas and wanted to upgrade to something with less slop and better control on steeps. I went ahead and spent the money for a whole new NTN setup and hated skiing on it. Could not get used to the binding feel, activity level, pivot point.
I'm now trying to sell the NTN gear and picking up a pair of Voile Switchbacks.

Whoa! I don’t even like looking at that. It looks like a steam punk project.
I express sympathy in weird ways.
Anyways…
What kind of 75 stuff are you looking for again?

You have a great binding setup, it just needs to be tuned. A set of Voile long-travel springs and cutting the TX Pro boot cuff below the 4th buckle (or F3 boots) would give you the downhill feel of a Switchback/T2 combo but with better touring ability.
