Re: Mounting 3-Pin over Xplore
The more I read this thread the more I think you should be contemplating some kind of reinforced phenolic plastic DIY mounting plate the thickness of whatever quiver killer you plan on using, screwing it down to your skis utilizing the current holes you have, then doing the swiss cheese on those mounting plates to find your happy place. I suspect a 12-16” long strip the width of your skis wouldn’t have an overwhelming effect on ski performance and you’d be able to utilize it in the future for other applications.
Maybe there’s a better product than reinforced phenolic plastic?

@JohnSKepler
Have you asked Asnes directly what their 75mm mounting point recommendation is?
What size are your feet?
Also-
this for Nordic touring in hilly/steep terrain- in-other-words, you are not looking for a downhill-focused mount?
@fisheater
Bob- where did you mount 75mm on your FTX?

I mounted pin line at balance point. The both tour and turn well.lilcliffy wrote: ↑Sat Nov 18, 2023 5:36 pm@JohnSKepler

@JohnSKepler
If your intent with the FTX + 75mm is to use them as a Nordic touring ski- for hilly/steep terrain- then I personally would stick with BP as well.
If your intent is a purely downhill-focused 75mm mount- then I would personally be considering boot-center on center-of-running-surface/effective edge. Can't remember- does the FTX have a boot-center mark?

Thank you for your most excellent response above to my curiousity John!JohnSKepler wrote: ↑Sat Nov 18, 2023 4:02 pm...
It's a good question with something of a multilayered answer.
...
I guess I appear very enthusiastic. I'm curious. I'm still excited. Still eagerly anticipating the first good snow fall. I'm still a kid. My wife tells me not everyone is like that but I'm not going to apologize for it.
...
I particulary appreciated your final expression- quoted here.
It resonates.

Re: Mounting 3-Pin over Xplore
So often it's about local geography. I'm really thinking this mount is for a primarily downhill application but where the hills are accessed via skins. As you and others have mentioned, I don't see this as an advantage over Xplore for touring. But for some of the local canyons and mountainsides, it might make a good lap ski. And part of me just wants two radically different mounts on the same ski so I can try both and feel the difference. How else will I ever really know what the difference is.lilcliffy wrote: ↑Sun Nov 19, 2023 5:42 amThanks Bob- that is what I thought on both counts.PS I contacted Asnes, balance point was their recommendation

As it is, @fisheater I think I have room for mounting the pin-line on the balance point AND mounting them more rearward, and I still have the Xplore mounted at the balance point and am playing with putting a cable on the Xplore. Having all that on a single ski would be a pretty cool test bed.
That has definitely been in my mind. Reinforced phenolic would certainly be stout enough. I'm wondering what Voile makes their riser out of? It feels like ABS. I bet 1/4" piece of ABS would do the job. And it's flexible enough that it wouldn't change the properties of the ski too much. Then again, there are those with Swiss cheese skis with no problems. Haha, I keep having this daydream that I'll suddenly be an awesome skier at one of the configurations. Alas, I suspect reality will be what it always is; reality.

Pretty sure Voile uses Nylon, possibly with fiber reinforcement for most of their plastic parts.

Re: Mounting 3-Pin over Xplore
After all that I mounted them on the balance point!
But, I learn a lot asking questions. Thanks for all the helpful comments and advice. Probably fun for you gurus watching me fall down all over myself wigging out over this amazing technology!
I’ll ski them a few times before I think about working in the cables. Oh, goody, another area to figure out.
Local mountains are supposed to get a foot or so Thanksgiving Day. Might get to try them out.
