In a very general sort of way, I don’ disagree with @Montana St Alum’s post and ideas.
I tend to lean more left — greater good sort of thing.
All these ideologies (democracy, socialism, communism, …) are based on best-case scenario where everyone behaves in a way that allows the pure form of the ideology to function in a healthy way.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to work that way.
As soon as there are a lot of people, personalities start getting in the way.
Some people (left, right, center, black, white, brown, yellow, atheist, orthodox, …) start acting based on self-interest, rather than in a way that will allow all the freedom to live a happy life.
And, of course we need to start having “rules” because there will always be outliers that just don’t see the world like the majority do, and they start doing things that piss people off.
So, pretty soon, there are systems in place, and people who control or manage the systems, and having things work out to their benefit becomes a temptation.
And then the system is corrupted.
Any system.
Too many people. And, at this point, too much technology. It’ll be interesting, but I think we’re screwed.
People tend to act based on self interest.
There is a really broad range of “what is good for me.”
All these problems are inherent in the nature of the human race.
There is no system that will solve that problem.
On a moment by moment basis, it’s easy to complain about the stupidity of particular situations.
Taking a more global / longer timeline view, I think real solutions are hard to come by.
All solutions are based on a system and philosophy and there is no one-size-fits-all system.
There’s always going to be people who aren’t happy with the way things are going!
@Montana St Alum
Rubbish, the system works fine in all of the Scandi countries. You should travel more, North America is hardly the center of good govt. and is not even terribly democratic (small d) anymore. You need to get out more.

@randoskier, I’m not tracking with your point on reposting what I said and referencing @Montana St Alum?
1. I never said “ North America is (hardly) the center of good govt,” and I sure don’t think it is;
2. Although I’m not as well educated about this as I would like, I have much more respect for the social and governmental structures in northern Europe than I do for what we got going on here;
3. If I lived in another country, someplace in Northern Europe would probably be it;
4. I would love to travel more and plan to;
5. While “the system works fine in all of the Scandi countries,” I doubt they are without their own sets of problems;
6. At least in the US, it seems to me that the rich and powerful have done a good job of selling the idea of “Opportunity” to the masses, such that the masses think they have the same opportunities as the rich and powerful, when, for the most part, the masses are just feeding the rich and powerful (Trump needs money for a new airplane?!);
7. I like about 90% of your posts, and regret that we seem to be slinging mud back and forth. You post a lot of really interesting and valuable stuff. At the same time, it seems like you just want to be pissed about something once in a while (and here I am).
I recently heard about something called “Theory of mind.” It’s a stupid expression for the interesting concept of my computer (mind) to be able to understand how, for example, your computer (brain) processes information.
The context of the concept (Theory of mind) was in relation to the ability of Republicans and Democrats to be able to understand each other. **
For example, I HAVE to believe that SOME of the people who support Trump are intelligent, well intentioned people. And yet, I just can’t get there. How? I don’t get it. And they would think the same of me: How can I not see that Trump’s world view is the way to go?
My point in saying this is that it seems there is a fundamental difference in our world views. *
The challenge is to somehow allow each to exist in peace.
EDIT:
*
Specifically, that some people think it’s ok to dump disrespect on people they aren’t simpatico with, like me here, now, or for example Mr. Baywatch. I don’t share this way of being. It’s of course tempting, but not how I want to live.

Lmao. That didn't really pass the test of time, imbecile.
To quote from @connyro's own keyboard, "Your schtick sounds spoon-fed directly and exclusively from "conservative" media." But replace "conservative" with simply... media (or 95% of media anyway).
Re: Canada Freedom Convoy
wtf is your point? you know what: never mind. I'm sure it's just some dopey bullshit meant to trick doughnuts like you.

My point is you are: an elitist, gaslighter, hypocrite, walking stereotype, cliche, or combo thereof. Do you say or think anything that doesn't come from a Democracy Now episode? Even the "putin skis in jeans" sign reeks of arrogance and smugness. I bet you also have some apparel stating "alpine is dead," and likely a trust fund.connyro wrote: ↑Sat Mar 04, 2023 8:37 pmwtf is your point? you know what: never mind. Here's a cliche for you: thanks for letting me live rent free in your head. Since you have a beef with me and not the rest of the forum, just send a friendly pm and we can chit chat to our heart's content. Sound good?mca80 wrote: ↑Sat Mar 04, 2023 8:47 pmMy point is you are: an elitist, gaslighter, hypocrite, walking stereotype, cliche, or combo thereof.
