Re: Mountain/Ski Food
I was at Dalvardo a cabin in Sweden, sharing with a bunch of Norwegian people from Mo i Rana, when they left (it was the last day of their tour) they gave me the rest of their bacon- WOOHOO!

Re: Mountain/Ski Food
Reindeer are different than caribou. We have both in Ak. The reindeer were imported from Scandinavia to start domestic herds.

Hi Al. It is the same animal. There are also wild reindeer herds in Norway, they are not all herded by the Sami. The herded reindeer range freely over hundreds of km and I would not really call them domesticated.lowangle al wrote: ↑Sun Feb 12, 2023 4:10 pmReindeer are different than caribou. We have both in Ak. They are also good surprisingly good swimmers that river is fast and pretty deep (those two swimming are semi-domesticated, I took that in Sweden near the border with Sulitjelma, Norway, just over the Arctic circle.lowangle al wrote: ↑Sun Feb 12, 2023 4:10 pmReindeer are different than caribou. There is much talk apparently of classifying them into separate species, but as of today they are classified as the same species.

It's the same animal, Eurasian or North American, wild or farmed. A number of sub-species have evolved due to different habitats.
I use the following site (login required) to determine where the Norwegian wild herds are, so that I can keep well away from them. They already have far too much disturbance from human activity. If common sense doesn't prevail then the lawmaker will step in.

Same species, yes. Same animal, no. A standardbred is not the same as a quarter horse which is not the same as a thoroughbred which is not the same as an Arabian, which is not the same as wild mustangs which are not the same as feral horses, yet all are horses, and all do share ancestry at some point.
