Of Moose and Men

At my buddy's remote farm in Norway (Nord Trondelag).

His Elghund (elk hound)- and to clear up something- in the English language Elk means what the Americans call moose, Elg in Norwegian. The British call what the Americans refer to as Elk- Wapiti. So America is a loner on that one. A Norwegian elkhound" is a moose-hound and that is what they use them for- hunting moose.

This is the Elghund of my friend Nils (I forget its name, it is a very nice dog I have known for several years) . Nils shoots three moose a year and that provides meat for the year at his remote farm 21km from a road. He also fishes trout with nets (also ice fishing) so has a big supply of fish, mostly Brown trout, some Char. The Elghund has moose joints buried in all over the yard- it takes one out gnaws on it for awhile then buries it again in the snow for future use.

There are so many moose here it is mind boggling, last time skiing up the Guan river we were so happy to find another skiers tracks, but after about two hundred meters we realized a moose had the same idea and followed this skier obliterating the track and sinking WAY in, it then apparently abruptly made a sharp exit stage right and the tracks and belly wamp marks went up a nearly vertical 10 meter high bank and disappeared into the forest.

The Malamutes were with the only other skiers we saw during that entire 12 day trip, a couple from Mo i Rana. One dog had become dehydrated and they stopped at the farm and asked if they could stay in the cabin we were in- we said of course- I love these dogs. They were lucky that the vet team was out on their snowmobiles inspecting the sheep farm so they saw to the dog. I want a Malamute or two but I have a 16 year old cat (ailing) and cohabitation is not possible.

Always thought this was sort of a joke, but when I was a teen, the cops picked me up for bike riding on the highway without a light at night and when I loaded my bike into the trunk of the squad car, all that was in there was a tire and two dozen donuts.

Hope this isn’t weird, but I saw a @Tom M doppelgänger at church today. Hehe.

Please tell me I’m not the only one who sees it. Maybe I have xcd too much on the mind.
