For years I used a bench, any bench, and some books I didn't care about. You can easily make your own XC vices out of wood as well. Plans online
If you are hot waxing, it's nice to have a room temperature ski. If you have stable temps grip waxing indoors is nice too. But I am always grip waxing in the field for the conditions I'm finding. A good hot wax will last long time and you can adjust grip wax in the field.
