What are your Skiing Travel Plans this Year?

Post by fisheater » Sun Nov 21, 2021 8:17 pm

When I was younger, myself and a couple friends would take a ski trip every year. That was in addition to several weekends in northern Michigan. Now, I am still trying to get a friend just to ski the local trails sometime. I think this might be the winter. However skiing had basically become a solitary thing for me, well except for my dog.
That longing for bigger more challenging terrain has not gone away. So I will be doing some exploring this winter without Ski Dog. I have two weeks of vacation time, that is difficult to use when the fish are biting!
My first destination will be White Grass, depending upon snow, but hopefully in early January. Ideally when I have a couple of free days over Christmas. I never realized, but it’s about the same drive from my house as Marquette, MI.
I also would like to take a trip to New York or New England in February. There are so many places to ski in that region. However there will likely be a covid surge once winter settles in. I have no interest in visiting if those states are locked down, or have similar travel restrictions that they had last year. So New England is a big maybe.

I grew up back east and spent many days happily skiing "Cow Hampshire" with my father and uncles. It doesn't matter where you go, just who you go with!
I'd like to get in a short range trip to Big Sky, Montana with my youngest son. Frankly, the biggest reason is that there is an insanely good barbeque place right there near the ski area.

If Vermont is travel-friendly, and you have the chops, I cannot over-recommend Mad River Glen...au natural. It's has a unique charm that is co-op owned. For a challenging experience, enjoy after a dry spell on a breezy day where the trails are wind-scoured... it's a lesson in humility that sticks.

"Cow Hampshire"
Used to routinely pass a farm in NH with these animals that looked like walking shag carpets. Turns out it was a beefalo farm.

I don't think that's a beefalo, it looks like a Scottish Highland breed.

First trip will be to the Dolomites in the Italian alps in january. Then up to Ramundberget in the middle of Sweden in february.

If I am lucky maybe a trip to Norway around easter.

For some european perspective ;)

Back in the days I read Powder, the photos of the Dolomites were always beautiful. As for Sweden or Norway, I would love to go, especially in winter!

Dolomites, Alps, even if it's just to play slap and tickle with the Mrs (mine, BTW :D ) and eat the food - count me in!

Right now, a road trip up to Grand Targhee with my son on Wednesday seems to be coming together.
Sadly, the Teton Teepee - my go to residence up there - hasn't got two rooms, so I guess VRBO is in order.

You may be right... identifying livestock breeds has always been a sore point for me. (What kind of goat is that? A boy goat.) My wit didn't get good grades in animal science.

I just did a google search, and that image came up. I cannot confirm exact specs because I was driving by and they were never lined up by the fence. Also, this is about 20-years ago. Main thing I remember was lots of hair, and the sign at the end of the drive said "Beefalo farm". Maybe they had various breeds on the farm.
