Year or two ago I found this on google maps and wondered what it was. I had an idea but wasn't entirely sure on how it was constructed. The other day I found myself halfway to it, and snow conditions allow you to go anywhere at decent speed right now, so I headed towards it.

Little beaver pond I skirted.

Beaver pond from space. It's the darkest looking bog on there.

Past the beaver pond, up a little hill, I find an area that was logged this winter (looks like they just left even) which made it impossible to ski. So I hike a bit, found a little spit of land that wasn't touched, continue skiing until I am forced to walk some more when I hit another logging road.

Walk down a ways, finally see a place where I can start skiing again on the left.

Snow still hadn't softened up and this was a little steep/slick for my skill level but once I got the angle right I was all good. This pic is looking back.

Once you get around that hill, there's an older (though, probably from recent memory) logging road that goes around the base of it. I didn't go up it too far to see where it went, but maybe next year.

Looking up the hill from the logging road. The hill is actually pretty steep and pretty big for the area (the area being what I can ski to from my house)

Below the logging road was a little creek I had to find my way across to get to the structure I could see in the satellite imagery.

Well, I can't add another photo, dunno if I broke something or there's a limit so I guess I will make this a two-parter.

More creek pics.

Make it across. Looking back from the other side somewhere.

Make it to this . . . thing, didn't think there was another creek here. Wait a sec, I realize this is the "trail" that leads up to the structure. It's an old railway grade, probably to haul out lumber back in the day. I don't think this went to any mining district. Anyway, I think somewhere upstream, the creek is dammed up and spilling over into the grade. This pic is looking away from the structure towards the south.

This one is looking towards the structure. You can't tell in really any of the pics I took, but they had to move lots of earth and blast through a large rock to get through here.

Here's the structure I spotted on google maps. Not sure what you call them exactly, dikes? Not sure if that would be correct because it isn't built to hold back water. This is the south dike "entrance."

Looking at the north dike.

Looking east from the north dike.

Mid-crossing on the way back.

Okay, that's it, hope this post worked out. Oh yeah. It was 10.00 miles exactly according to my tracker app. Also seems to maybe be my max cuz my right toe was starting to bother me around mile 8 or so. Probably need new/better insoles. Snow got really slushy when I started coming back too which really slowed me down.

Tried to ski today. Think I'm done for the season. Took these pics today.

Last year I found a bunch of three-four foot deep holes dug nearby which kinda pisses me off. Not sure what they were doing, don't even really care, but for god sake, fill in your holes.

@Bazillions Those structures... are they manmade or are they eskers? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esker

We have eskers throughout NY and New England especially up north, I'm sure you would as well.

I love standing on top of eskers... and visualizing that I'm standing on the bed of a sub-glacial river... fascinating stuff.

Skiing at Cannon Mt this week. Mt. Lafayette (5249'/1599m) in the background anchoring the famous Franconia Ridge which heads south (to the right). Snow looks like it should in mid-April. goddammit.

I'm fairly certain it's manmade.

Lower Michigan has a lot of eskers according to that wiki, I will look into if there's any up here by me, there's probably something. Gives me something to look for.

Another busy day at Deer Valley. Day 75 and another 6" overnight!
Still plenty of beautiful snow covered bumps out there.

Run #4, some friends caught me at the bottom of a run:
