Accidentally bought Fischer e99 waxing version. First time to wax. Should I keep them?

There is another possibility, Madshus makes skins which only have fur in the middle part of the ski and there is some glide zone in front.

So if you were to take your skis with wax for cold temperatures and use this skins when you lose grip when the snow is too warm, this could work. I don't know how much better they are than full length skins, but they cannot be worse

This post from Roelant was excellent. I only edited the quote to draw attention to the pearl of wisdom I missed In my first reading.I overlooked the unique Madshus skin recommended. It essentially allows the user to use the ski as a regular wax ski. However while the “skin” is full length allowing it to be used on skis without manufactured skin insert receivers. Rather the “skin” is polyethylene over most of the ski length with a mohair section in the kick zone.
This unique product will allow the OP to use his waxable E-99 in cold, easy waxing conditions with wax, while when temps rise near the point of freezing the Intelligrip skin can be utilized, approximating the the generally recommended skin insert performance.
It is at least another very viable option.

Fish, its a good idea however those Madshus skins are an example of exceptionnaly POOR workmanship. I own a pair. They will disintegrate at the anchor point in no time flat. Do not bring these in the BC. The black diamond half skins had a damned metal plate but they will withstand a beating.

My god man, you're trying to ruin this guy's trip! He has enough to do and see and enjoy without spending 20 minutes every two hours changing waxes (and hoping he didn't make the wrong call, which even pros do 50% of the time.

I literally advised him several times to use skins if it's possible

If it is so "ridiculously easy" then what wax would you recommend for pulling a pulk...in spring from Am to PM...over a long distance...for many days.

Where I live it's really normal. I totally agree, you don't get skis to go waxing, you get wax to go skiing. But what can I say, it's a pleasure, and I'm clearly not going to change anyone's mind by arguing on the internet! Happy Christmas wherever you are!

For sled pulling, I would recommend what you already tested before, Amundsen Waxless with the possibility to attach X-skins. E99 Easy-skin is another option.

I like waxable skis for day trips when I can prepare the skis in room temperature. For winter camping on the tundra or as we say ”kalfjället”, everything needs to be more functional. As mentioned, in April, snow conditions are challenging when it comes to waxing. Universalklister is usually the best working both below and above 0 C.

I hope the borders will open up in April. Right now I’m in my mountain home 5 km from Norway, but forbidden to cross.

Oh goodness, I thought I had set email alerts if anyone replied to this thread, assumed no one had replied and then I come along and find 22 very high quality replies with great ideas, debate, and nuance! Thanks everyone who posted! I have read each reply carefully. Good points on all sides.
I think I am going to keep an eye out for a good deal on fish-scale or the more modern short-skin-capable skis.
To those who say "get both" I am trying to avoid this dangerous path! I've seen some of the ski/boot collections on here..!!
If nothing comes up (there is a very limited used market for this type of skiing in UK) I will try my luck at wax following your advice and also investigate the 'Madshus Intelligrip' or 'Black Diamond Glidelite Mix Kicker Skins' which seem like they could fill in the gap a bit. I do not want to get sucked into wax-geekery though, I saw someone on fjellforum.no mention that skiwax chat was forbidden at their dinner table which I thought was rather amusing.
Brexit and Corona may well sink the trip but flights are around USD 85 return just now and I need something to plan so I'm blindly going for it.

Though I do not own a set of these Madshus Intellogrip kicker skins (I was determined to get a pair at one point)-
I did get a chance to examine them-

I would NOT take these skins on a remote day tour- let alone a multi-day expedition!

No need for a scrapper. Just use your other skis edge to scrape off. Unless things are going badly I hardly ever scrap of wax. Instead add another layer of appropriate wax. If it's above 27 degrees don't even bother with wax. I hate using Red!

This is my approach. Not working? Put more and better wax on. Scrapers are for total disasters or if you're being fancy. I don't mind using Red, I mean it's not a deal breaker, but I know I'm in the minority.

(We do usually take a little Swix scraper with us when we go out though just in case, but I used the sharp edge of an iPhone 5 to scrape off an over-goo last winter).

Pretty good! Using a iPhone5 to scrape wax and ice! I wonder if a Huawei P30 'd be good; on the other hand, you take the risk of being spied by the chinese... to conceal precious info about waxing. «They» could try to manipulate us to get into waxless exclusiveness (I know they run the «consensual» debate on the net...).

With Musk Ox....use Red and pink at higher temps....figure it will get worked off on the way down...If I HAVE to will scrape the way telekid said....The thing with wax is it makes the ski faster in all conditions as an old guy that is good...Never lift a ski and shuffle and slide in the flats...If the ski is fast enough can actually go long at a moderate rate....TM
