Advice for telemark skis on hardpacck

Post by Joman » Wed Dec 16, 2020 9:46 am

I started telemark this year with wide skis (Black Crows Navis). As the snow conditions are rarely powder where I live, I am looking for another pair of skis to be able to carve better on hardpack. I ski NTN.

What model would you buy and why? The price no matter I play on the Nostalgia casino here is their review https://bestcasinos-ca.com/reviews/nostalgia-casino.php and sometimes win money, so I can buy good skis

if I was skiing in the East on hardback, I use my old Rossi Powderbirds. they are old enough that even though called "powder" they have a narrow waist but still have good shape. I'd use them because I already own them.

Here's a good 2020-21 buyer's guide.

https://blisterreview.com/winter-buyers-guide

I'd look in the "Frontside" category to start, in the 83 to 90mm underfoot. Narrower and stiffer may be better, for edge hold, and there are several skis in here that are categorized as very versatile.

The carvy end of my spectrum is a Rossi EXP 84 AI which is a tight turner out west. Something like an EXP 88, though wider, is probably stiffer and may be better back east.

The Blizzard Brahma 88 is a standout in the tests on ice under "All Mountain more stable". Not my cup of tea, as I like a bit of tail rocker, but if a flat tail works for you, it's a contender, I suppose.

The Nordica Enforcer 88 looks like a stand out, to me.

Nordica and Blizzard are distributed by the same guys... I suspect the skis are made at the same place. For instance, if you take a W Black Pearl, and you look under Nordica catalogue, you'll find the same ski under a different name and graphics.

As far as I am concerned, if I was looking for a carver — not a dedicated FIS ski though (too specific) — I would get the Bliz Latigo.

Be careful about the marketing bullshit... «a magnificent carver and a redoutable pow ski» doesn't exist. That's what we read most of the time in the fat ski description. My recommendation: stay around or preferably under 80... you already have a fatter ski anyway, if I read well...

Very interesting looking ski. I haven't found them post 2017, do they still make it?
In fact, I'm not having much luck finding an under-80mm carver sold without alpine bindings. It would be a shame if manufacturers were victims of their own marketing in this regard (they may be using the opportunity to sell their bindings as well as a ski), because it would be a good excuse for me to add yet another ski to my quiver!

You can still find some... but I think they do not make it anymore — victim of the current fashion...

If you are buying new certainly look for narrower and stiffer skis touted for resort or "all mountain" but the beautiful thing is that some tip and tail rocker give lots more pressure on a shorter section of the edge so much better ice hold than an older single camber resort ski. My only experience in this regard is my Moonlights that are amazingly versatile. You still get a ski that will be happy to play on the odd day when you get a dump of fresh.

Go with the marked boot centre when mounting so that you are in centre with the full edge active and the shorter length that comes into play on hardpack and ice.

I'm amazed at the number of skiers I see on huge wide planks on our Ontario boiler plate. Looks cool I guess. Check out what ski racers and their coaches are rocking if you want to see what a pure ice ski looks like.
I acknowledge that I live on the traditional territory of the Algonquin Nation

I found this article on ski selection to be very helpful, and about what I am thinking of as a frontside, east coast skier https://absolutetelemark.com/blog/

If you need a casino you can trust then before playing you have to spend some time on searching information about it. The best way to find the best casinos in to go here and read reviews. Not only you'll understand scams they are or not although you'll find detailed reviews on them.
