Re: "Stupid" Waxing Question
The pattern I cut into my skis is negative, as you can't add material by machining. Also, the pattern is sort of the inverse of the one on lots of commercially made skis. Hard to explain what I'm saying but the takeaway is that sharpening an existing but worn pattern would be very impractical.
By far the best way to get skis with the bases you want is to buy them that way. I had a particular idea, i.e. unusually narrow, modern shaped skis with significant tip rocker and a waxless base, that just wasn't available to buy. And access to machine tools.
I wanted this combo specifically for skiing corn snow and slush, where kick wax doesn't work and skins are slow, also where fishscales greatly reduce suction skiing downhill.
Bottom line, if I could have bought the skis I wanted, modifying skis would not have been at all reasonable.

Wow, looks like those would climb well. Looked like brand new leather boots too. I prefer climbing wax over scales any day, but they have there place.

Give it a shot - would probably work for a while - once it gets chippy - just apply more and scrape it flat. Actually - now I want to give it a try.

Love climbing wax but after about 25 degrees or so fish scales really excel. I’m ok with giving up a little speed for getting me up to the goods. Been years since I’ve had skins but thinking I’ll get some soon. Definitely enjoy a traversing up trail vs going straight up.
