Mostly look at the thermometer....after that not to hard....I have polar...(White)...couple different greens....blue...blue extra....pink blue (V45)....red....Mostly using some white lots of green and blue....Generally put on what the temp calls for....and if the trip is up...put on the next wax up under foot....Example....white to just beyond camber.....green under foot....Blue to just beyond camber...extra blue under foot....Mostly works as the camber helps release the under foot stuff and the skis ride the shovels well....With skinnies to turn you need speed so if things are to slow will scrape off the wax with skis doing the scraping....Few days ago had blue which would have worked well and dis the blue extra under foot....bummer had wicked up ability but had to de wax to have the speed for turning....My mistake....I paid....but then standing on top of a knob up in the Kingdom with Ravens communing.....who cares???? I have been able to make the wax work, sometimes no perfect, but work. Now here’s where I’m the village idiot. I actually have a pair of Asnes 45 mm mohair skins. I guess I should give them a try before I reach for Swix Violet.
Speaking of violet, I bought a tin because it was recommended by a certain Massachusetts area forum member. All I ask is what gives??? I gotta say, I’m holding of MT-51’s, they’re a lot more expensive than a tin of was!

Since my inflection doesn’t come across in written words, I’m just pulling somebody’s chain.
I have just come home from a 19km circuit with Violet on and it was utter perfection. An unalloyed pleasure, -1° C, last nights snow. Perfect. I'd try Violet before skins every time, I have to say. Red/Silver gives me the heebiejeebies and makes me reach for the skin skis on the other hand

And now I am thinking about buying more wax. This may be turning into an unhealthy habit.

When you say Violet was 'utter perfection' in those conditions are you talking about V50 'Violet' or V45 'Violet Special'?

If you are just going out for a day-tour-
Try keeping your really soft kick waxes (e.g. Swix Red) in the freezer- it is much easier to crayon evenly when it is frozen.
Cross-country AND down-hill skiing in the backcountry.
Unashamed to be a "cross-country type" and love skiing down-hill.
