Two things....Alpine and Off Piste.....one plus the other does not equal two....It's one or the other....When discussing help us all by indicating one or the other...TM
"Alpine" and "Off Piste" are not the opposite of one another. In fact, they don't even reference or relate to the same topic. They're apples and oranges.

I think that you've got this wrong TM. It's downhill skiing either way. Technique and equipment is basically the same. Terrain is similar too. You can ride a lift and ski 'alpine' or off piste. You can skin up and ski down both 'alpine' and off-piste slopes.

I see no indication of you being attacked. What I see is you feeling quite bothered by someone elses words which have nothing in fact to do with you.

I'm not too sure where TM is going with Alpine and Off Piste. My best guess is he is suggesting Resort alpine skiing and Backcountry skiing should be considered differently. While some equipment is OK for both styles, I do agree Resort/Backcountry skiing CAN be considered quite different from one another.

Besides, even though several of us here sometimes land comments that are not on par, repeats, or totally beside the subject, I appreciate above all those caracters that give me a good laugh. I must admit Teleman is at the top of my list here in that regard. Thank you TM for spicing it up. :P
I live for the Telemark arc....The feeeeeeel.....I ski miles to get to a place where there is guaranteed snow to do the deal....TM

I don't know if we can extrapolate from this:
We cannot. You are comparing cross-country boots and bindings with buckled plastic tele boots and cable bindings... Two different things, two different sports, two different

Skiing in plastic boots and hard charging down steep slopes does get boring after 30+ years. The soft fluffy snow on a light NNN BC with 4 lbs skis is amazing...You can feel the snow under your feet (yes, like wearing slippers). There is something magical about that. Turning with your toes is great...I love xcd!
Ahhhh...! You are reading my mind jyw5! So glad to hear that I'm not alone in XCD Land! I threw away all my T4s, Excursions and Voile cables several years ago... Although I thought that hardcore telemark was 10 times more fun than alpine, XCD in leathers is just 100 times more fun than telemark... 8-)

Johnny, you aren't alone in your views. Too each their own. I skiied down a 1300ft vertical moderate slope the other day and it was amazing on my ft62 NNN BC with soft boots. Sorry to all others, but I just don't get my jollies off of skiing in plastic boots any more.

As to some of the sex comments on here, wearing plastic boots is like wearing a thick condom. It's utterly boring and "why bother?"

I think 30 years skiing is a long time, and perhaps I have skiied so much that I no longer feel the excitement that I once did. XCD on this light setup definitely feels like a new and different sport...you can disagree but thats how I feel about it.

And yes, lots of flailing in the beginning and still some epic faceplants and crashes...but to achieve the same high on plastic boots and heavy skis, I would have to ski 60 degree chutes after boot packing icy summits...which is far more dangerous.

My Alfa Guards are hopefully arriving soon after a month of waiting from Sportalbert. DHL finally updated the tracking...maybe I will have the boots by next wk! Can't wait!

Relax everyone... it's about having fun and discussing different ways to enjoy skiing.

You are lucky you had 30 years experience before trying it on light xcd gear. Imagine trying to figure it out on 210cm double camber skis with no big mountain experience.

I had almost 30 years skiing leather boots almost exclusively and was due for a change.(ditched the double camber skis years ago) I agree it's about having fun and discussing different ways of skiing so why did you have to insult many of us by saying that what we do is boring and "why bother"?
