Summit Cone Pariah

Post by blastOplast » Fri Sep 14, 2018 1:55 pm

Has anyone skied these?

They were reviewed favorably in the Backcountry Gear Issue. I think it would be cool to support the folks behind Telemarkdown. Also, I find it funny that you void the warranty if you don't mount them with tele bindings.

I have NOT SKIED these skis.

I have TALKED TO PEOPLE WHO WERE, IN PERSON, WHILE THEY WERE SKIING THEM.

Nothing but good things. Very happy. I fondled them and stuff. Intrigued but you know, other skis.

I do like the dimensions- my favorite. They looked bomber in construction.

Wicked looking ski! Would love to try it!

Welcome "blastOplast"! (not sure if you are new here)

If you post this in the general Telemark Talk Forum you might get more people to read it- perhaps find skiers that know this ski:

Cross-country AND down-hill skiing in the backcountry.
Unashamed to be a "cross-country type" and love skiing down-hill.

Me too.

I have a pair of Voile V6s which are nearly identical dimensionally, which is why I probably won't buy these, because you know, other skis... :)

You need these skis. The V6 has a narrower tail and probably a different flex, which changes everything. This has a slightly shorter turn radius thanks to the wider tail. There is only one way to find out how the two stack up to each other!

Good point. I do find the straight and narrow tails of the V6s odd.

Helps sink the tail and keeps the back ski tip-up in deep pow when driving hard? That's what I always thought. (When in full tele mode)

Summit Cone Pariah 184cm
133-97-119mm (mid-to-tail "sidecut": 22mm)
turn radius: 18m

Voile V6 183cm
133-100-113mm (mid-to-tail "sidecut": 13mm)
turn radius: 19m

And just for comparison-
Voile Vector 184cm
133-98-116mm (mid-to-tail "sidecut": 18mm)
turn radius: 20m

I say "sidecut" because rocker makes skis very much three-dimensional in their physics...

The V6 doesn't have a narrow tail- it has less sidecut. It also has more tip and tail rocker.

All of these skis have rockered tips- that play no role in the effective edge of the ski- therefore they do not influence the functional sidecut of the ski. They are wide and rockered to offer early-tip-rise and ease of turn initiation.

The V6's turn radius is only 1m wider than the Pariah- despite it having less sidecut.
The V6's turn radius is 1m narrower than the Vector- despite it having less sidecut.

The V6 is a powder-specific ski.
The other two or more "all-mountain" in their performance- the Vector having the longest and most effective edge-hold of the two. The Pariah is perhaps more "balanced" than the Vector- but, that could be its downfall as well...Often- IME- skis that are designed to perform in all conditions- excel in none...
Cross-country AND down-hill skiing in the backcountry.

Thanks for the clarification. I understand your explanation and it makes sense. At the same time I think it's fair to say that "proportionally" V6s have narrow tails, just from the looks at least... and how they feel when you are finishing a turn.

I couldn't agree more. I bought the V6s for a backcountry powder ski because that's the skiing I, like everyone else, enjoy most. Last year, I was fortunate that it was also the conditions I rode most often. Plus I only had the cash for a single upgrade instead of full quiver revamp. On a low tide in-bounds day they simply aren't that much fun, but it's what I got.

Just picked up a pair of the 2019 model, and will report back. They look and feel awesome.

After ripping out of some lightweight dynafit skis and getting told dynafit does not support tele, I am stoked on the Pariah warranty regarding alpine bindings :)
