We'll see how she does at home - she can go right back anytime within the first two years and get a position in her district. After that, she'll have to reapply. I really expect she won't go back to work until the boys are at least going to pre-school, say 4 yo.

Right now she's way too nervous/anxious about the boys to even think about work. They are doing fine but having kids come out 10 weeks before their due date is a taxing twist of fate. And then of course there's the adjustment of having 3 babies to care for at once.

I'm thinking the same way you are though. If I get another bit of land and have a second place, the plan will be to move there. Most likely after I have things paid off and can afford to take a lower paying job doing whatever and rid myself of a residence in Rochester.

Didn't plan on having 3 kids though; that puts a wrench in my gears, but I'll figure it out...

Mike:
Did you have triplets? Wow! The two of you must be very busy parents! You are fortunate that you live in an area where you get to ski. You have many years ahead to fulfill your dreams about moving or having a cabin. Good that your wife can be at home with your boys. Those earlier years are so important. Enjoy it!

The town that I live in (Bozeman, MT) has experienced huge growth. I am ready for a rural lifestyle so we are in the process of searching. It sounds like you found the place that is just right for you and your family.

Yup - we have 3 boys now!

We will be busy and I may not get to do as much in the next couple years, but it will be worth it and I can't wait until they are old enough to do fun stuff.

Mike:
Great photo! Your wife looks very perky and happy. Handsome young boys. Your life will be filled with fun, adventure and joy with all those boys. Start them skiing young and keep them busy building and creating things. Congratulations!

Another wonderful photo Mike.

Happy holidays to all 5 of you!
Cross-country AND down-hill skiing in the backcountry.
Unashamed to be a "cross-country type" and love skiing down-hill.

Reno, Nevada

Most of the year is blue sky. Annual rainfall is about 6 inches - the Sierras take most of the moisture and hold it in a snow pack that won't rot out like continental ranges, so you can ski into June most years. Skiing above 8000 feet is 30 minutes from downtown. The city is about to launch its next 20 year plan - putting casinos in the back seat and refocusing to a college, outdoors loving, tech hub. There is a large cycling community (road and mountain).

It would be somewhat similar to what you like about Bend, but Reno has a larger economy, making it easier to make a living. I can send you a metro report for both cities with stats, etc. if you send me your email to danomike@yahoo.com

Thanks guys!

Yeah - Reno, or anywhere around or near Tahoe looks awesome, but I always figured it was way out of my price range.

We looked into Reno as a retirement location. Housing is not (yet) exorbitant, but last 2 years it was a very hot housing market. Apparently this was due to the Tesla "gigafactory", which is now under construction. Closer to Lake Tahoe the housing prices are much higher.

Bend, Oregon: You should have been there 50 years ago. Everybody (skiers, bikers, rafters, hunters, fishermen, uber-athletes, contractors, realestaters) wants to live there. Trouble is having a fat wallet and a tolerance for hoards of people wanting the same thing you want. Yes, beautiful country and lots of outdoor opportunities. But you pay the price.

West of the Oregon Cascades: Yuk, hope you like dreary miserably cold wet winters. The big Oregon colleges are the UofO Ducks and OSU Beavers should be a clue.

Me? I live in a small cattle town nestled in the eastside of southern Oregon Cascades. Winter all winter, summer all summer.

Mike, congrats to you and your family. The boys should keep you busy for the years to come.
