The relation between BP and chord isn't always what you think. Measure your S Bounds. Balance should be right at chord.

Traditional skis tend to have chord forward of balance point i.e. toward the tip.

yes, with E99's chord center seems to be 1-1.5" inches forward of BP. On the Madshus Epoch I had I think BP was actually forward of CC.

Madshus skis come marked with a range of mounting points based on shoe size. However, when I talked to Neptune and some other shops (ORS, Stowe Nordic Barn) those guys swear by BP for all XCD skis, regardless of shoe size.

My Epochs had BP aft of chord, I think all the Mads I had did. Their marks were always forward of chord except for maybe the smallest boot size on the Eon and (maybe) Epoch. I know the Annum they were all forward and the farthest forward of them all. It seems to me the more dh those skis were, the more they wanted you to mount forward of chord. BP on the Annum was WAY back from the suggested mounting points. They'd look strange if you mounted them that way.

I've mounted them up on chord and forward by various amounts. All different skis though so I'm comparing apples to oranges. My best turning skis (the S98) have the balance a few cm forward of chord and that's where the pin line is. I don't know if that really has anything to do with how they turn, but they initiate easier than anything. I think it's more the side profile.

For now I've decided that all my xc focused skis, I mount at balance. The S Bounds I mount where they suggest, same with the Mads. If I were to get a pair of Gammes, I'd probably mount those at balance. If I were to get the Ingstads, I'd probably mount +1cm from chord.

It makes sense to me that the farther forward your weight is on the ski, especially a freeheel ski, the easier it will be to initiate turning. I don't buy into this tail dragging theory.

It sounded strange to me too. Another data point is Dennis at Ragged Mountain Sports in NH. He has been mounting tele skis since back in the day. He told me BP for E99-type skis. For flatter camber skis, chord center. Unfortunately this takes experimentation to see what you like.

I need to buy a better drill and make a 3-pin jig so I can do my own work. I just had my old waxing E99 mounted 1cm ahead of BP, still waiting to try them. I highly doubt 1cm forward or back of BP or chord center is going to make much difference. I have 1cm of empty space in my boot toes because I have to wear longer boots for more width.
