ADK Trail Development Guidelines

A proposal only, but it sounds really promising. I'll highlight some of the interesting stuff.

FYI this all ungroomed, free to use, state owned land.

Nordic Trail:

Applies to both new and existing trails that may fit the classification.

For all abilities. The trails will be designed with speeds associated with beginner skiing as a distinguishing
characteristic. Gentle curves and mild slopes will require a limited ability to control speed
and navigate variable terrain.

Loops and hardwoods preferred.

Clearing Width:
One-way traffic = 6'
Two-way traffic = 8'
>10% Grade = 12'

Turning Radius:
Provide gradual curves.
Minimum: Inside turning radius of 30 feet

Trail Grade:
Average: 4%-10% (2.3 – 5.7 degrees)
Maximum: 20% (11.3 degrees)

Outslope:
Maximum: 10% (5.7 degrees)

Backcountry Trail:

Applies to both new and existing trails that may fit the classification.

Intermediate and advanced. The trails will be designed with speeds and challenges associated with advanced level skiing as a distinguishing characteristic. Curves and slopes on the trails will require an ability to control speed and
navigate variable terrain.

Loops and hardwoods preferred.

Clearing Width:
One-way traffic = 6'
Two-way traffic = 8'
>10% Grade = 12'

Turning Radius:
Minimum: Inside turning radius of 20 feet

Trail Grade:
Average: 10%-30% (5.71 – 16.7 degrees)
Maximum: 40% (21.8 degrees)

Outslope:
Maximum: 20% (11.31 degrees)

Sight Distance:
100' in steep sections with potential hazards

Skintracks:

For slide access, etc. Limited to 4' width. Uphill travel only.

I would imagine there will be some stuff done in that area if the proposal is accepted. As of now it's just a general proposal with no sites specified.

The proposal did mention keeping trails under 3300'. This is mainly because of the change in the forest type from mixed hardwood to more of a boreal/alpine environment.
