Skin restoration
Skin restoration
I did a huge clean up in the gear shed yesterday. Put summer stuff away and organize winter stuff for ski swap and repair. I have a couple pair of skins that can't be put off another season. They need a reglue and something to clean the plush and fluff it up or something. Everybody has a different technique so let's hear them. I use automotive brake cleaner and an compressed air with a blowgun on the plush with pretty good results. My reglues end up looking like crap on a cracker.
Re: Skin restoration
I'd like to hear about regluing too. I've heard good things about the G3 reglue kit.
Basically, I've got an old set of BCA skins (just plain yellow hair) that were always junk to begin with but are even worse now. Seems the sticky side never sticks to the skis and the slippery side always sticks to whopping big clumps of snow. Anyway, they're for my older rock skis so I'm not interested in dropping another $100+ on new skins.
If anyone has experience with multiple reglue systems and can provide insight as to which they like best & why I'd appreciate it. Also, where does one get paper grocery bags for the unglueing these days?

Re: Skin restoration
I've read a bunch and did the youtube thing. So I'm looking too. Has anyone done a re-glue?

Re: Skin restoration
All my skins would be due for reglue... But I don't wanna mess with that anymore...

Re: Skin restoration
I just did a little restore a pair. Took a paper bag and cut it into strips, not the full length of the skin & little wider than the skin. put the skin on the ski, glue side up, turn my iron on high. covered the skin with the paper bag and applied heat. moved slow but not too slow.

It seemed to take the first layer off and did a good job restoring the skins. Haven't tried re-glueing but that is next.
