Xplore binding mounting point for Epochs

I am about to mount Rottefella Xplore binding on my Madshus Epoch skis. I am not sure whether to mount "pins on balance point" or "pins to pin line marked on the ski". There are three pin lines marked on the ski (spaced in 1 cm), each for different mondo size. What would you recommend? I want to use the set with Pioneer Pro boots also for earning some easy turns in undulating terrain.

I would go with their recommended placement for your boot size, it's time tested. Only exception was years ago, when that line of skis was still new Karhu had a bad run or two with mis-marked top sheets. That was more than a dozen years ago.

I second Phoenix's advice here- that ski is meant to be mounted with a more downhill-oriented position than a traditional XC balance point.
Though I am assuming the "pins" that are being referred to is the pin line on a 75mm duckbill, so if you are a nerd- like me- you might consider that in relation to where your foot will end up mounted on the ski with Xplore... :ugeek:

You nailed it. Xplore binding has its pinline between "tech" pins therefore it is a question whether to consider it to be the same as for 3pin binding :?

I am not sure about that Gareth. Because, the fulcrum of a 3 pin binding is at the pin line; the fulcrum of a Xplore is also at the pins. I am not exactly sure, but I would mount pin on the pin line (that correlates to the right boot size). Again, I would ask Rotte to be more sure...

That's true Rod, but the ball of foot and your weight is further back on the 75mm in relation to that fulcrum.

@Wabene, You are right... But I still need to think about it — relation between fulcrum, BOF, BP, etc... Hum, not that easy...

I'd probably approach this from a boot center perspective. In other words, where is the boot center if mounted 3 pin with pins on rec? Then, using boot center as your starting point, you can see where the Explore pins would wind up. This of course would require having boots of both systems and of the same sole length on hand.

But, to be honest, I'm probably just as likely to flip a coin and split the difference
