Fixing toe pinch

Post by Rodbelan » Sat Feb 11, 2023 7:44 am

I bought an almost new leather boot. A nice one from that guy in Vilnius — I'll show you a picture today. On my right hand side boot, the crease pinch my toes... It is more annoying than anything else. Is there a way to fix this?

It will probably soften up when broken in. You might rub some good leather conditioner over the area, a few times perhaps, to help speed that up.

I find the position of the tongue has an impact on where a boot will crease while breaking it in. If one boot is flexing fine then make sure the other has the tongue pulled up similarly. Another thing that can work is to stuff some thin foam or something in there on top of your toes during the break in process which can move the crease back.

Yup, that's what I am doing right now. Using ox foot oil (hum... sort of a direct translation).

I'd add, find something rigid to put in the toe box at that point that won't compress and clamp it flexed to distribute/flatten/make-new the folding of leather across a broader area. Leather is skin, and skin stretches, so it tends to "learn" the wearer with time. Likewise, if it starts to go sideways like the tongue off to one side, you have to correct that early or it being out-of-line will become the "new norm".

Some also just get leather wet then wear it to break it in, then slow dry it while applying oils to keep it from drying out, and no heat. Don't use good socks if you do this as leather dye can bleed and stain cloth and skin, the latter temporary.

You can try putting something like a tennis ball into the toe of the boot and flexing it or holding it flexed to try and reset the crease.

Something like a raquetball or squash ball works best for the size.
