I've recently picked up a pair of Axls, used but in great shape. However, upon closer inspection, one of the springs was actually broken. I was quite perplexed as to how that even happens, but I spent the 18 bucks a new one and didn't think much more about it. Once I went to put the new spring in, I realized that it likely broke because the front cable is somehow uneven, and longer on one side.

I wouldn't think this would be a huge issue, except I can't for the life of me figure out how to get it out to adjust it. I'm assuming I need to either remove the pivot screws (and the epoxy them back in place), or unmount the whole binding and then disassemble it further from there.

Has anyone else had a similar experience, or know how I can get the front cable out to adjust it?

It sounds like the cable is just turned in too far on one side of the heel loop (the rigid "U" portion that holds the heel throw.)

It may have nothing at all to do with the broken spring either as those components work together but are separate systems.

The cable ends (22D calls them Adjustment coils) are threaded into the heel loop righty-tighty-lefty-loosy. There is the possibility it got threaded in to the heel loop too far and got stuck, or some water got in and gummed up the works.

If you can't unthread the cable end from the heel loop on the "short side" by hand, use a little bit of bicycle inner tube or thick leather to protect/cover the cable and heel loop while pinching with pliers and turn the threaded portion out. don't squeeze the heel loop too hard, its a tube and can be crushed.

Same experience with a used Axl a few years back. Replaced the broken spring and after checking the alignment of the adjustment coils, saw that the front cable wasn't even on the "clip loop" causing the whole spring box to be out of alignment.

I ended up popping the flex plate back off and used a vise grip with some rubber tubing (so as not to scratch the front cable) to pull or push that cable around the clip loop to even the cable out again. Some good info on taking the flex plate off and so on in the 22D manuals on their website but yeah they don't mention adjusting the front cable at all!
