Changing bindings

Is it OK to change bindings on a ski? Say you have a BC binding and you wanted to change it to a 75 mm three pin binding. I imagine there would be a different hole pattern, extra holes etc. Possible, permissible?

I'm far from an expert, but I just did the same with a pair of skis I picked up for next to nothing. You will more than likely need new holes - the holes from the BC binding will likely be in the wrong position. You will need to fill in the old holes. I'm not going to tell you where to drill your new holes, because I'd hate to tell you wrong. I couldn't get ahold of a drill template for my bindings so I got my advice for positioning the holes from a REI ski shop. If you can get ahold of a template for your bindings, it might relieve some of the guess work. Either way, you'll need to find the balance point on your skis if its not already marked. I'll let others with more experience chime in on what to do. Good luck!

The hole pattern is the same, but the balance point is different.

You can hammer in golf tees into wood glue in the old holes. If the new holes are more than a couple of CM from the old holes, I'd imagine the connection would be secure. Ask at a shop or use inserts in epoxy to be more secure.

You can usually download a template to overlay to see what you're working with as far as new position.

I've heard that it is best to not put a new hole within 1 centimeter of an old hole. I agree with @Montana St Alum on the inserts. You can also get them here if you want to do it yourself: https://www.bindingfreedom.com/

If you hammer golf tees into a hole filled with wood glue, use Titebond III or another waterPROOF glue. Snow melts into water and if it isn't waterPROOF...

Yeah 1cm+ sounds more accurate.
