I've seen a few posts on the QST92s - 99s, but I've noticed there are some decently priced 85s around. From what I can tell, the difference is that the wider models are reinforced with carbon. I'm wondering if I should stay away from these and jump up to the 92s or something... anyone had any success with the 85s?

I guess my concern would be the bindings popping off but other than a solid wood core i'm not sure what I should be looking for

And I see references in google with the Meidjo binding... though i'm going to be using a 22designs vice...

Yeah, I don't think binding retention will be a problem:

"Ti Binding Reinforcement: A titanal insert edge-to-edge underfoot, running throughout the ski, for maximal power and increased hard snow edging."

If you're really worried, you could put in a couple of "Binding Freedom" inserts in the high stress areas, but probably not needed.

Yes, go for it. To second MSU's opinion, binding pullout is not going to be a problem. Titanal layer underfoot is as burly as it gets for mounting. I don't think carbon helps binding retention at all, anyway.

I also think carbon in skis harshes the mellow of the ride and is generally useless in skis unless you want an ultralightweight stiff skimo ski. But people love their carbon!

Im more than happy with my QST 99 with Rottefella NTN and Scarpa boots. Both in and off pist!

The QST range are very competent skiis.
