Alternatively you can use the more scientific method of applying the mathematical formula

#of skis needed = x+1

where x is the number of skis you currently own.
Interestingly this also works for bikes!

I don't need anyone to tell me if I need new skis.

I do.

The algorithm can be DRAMATICALLY improoved just like

-#of skis needed = x+1
+#of skis needed = x+2 /*One for you and same for wife */

Step 1) Are the skis red? No - Need new skis.

Step 2) Are the skis red? Yes - Need new red skis as these are the wrong color red.

Brought to you by various "old telemarktalk red ski" posts by various posters whose user names I have forgotten.

No doubt about it this chart works equally well with windsurfing gear. My wife is a math teacher so having that fall back formula should lock the deal. 8-)

Let's not be bringing "need" into the discussion.
