So Woods, you seem to be the only one who actually pulled the trigger on the new Otto. I am curious to know where do you see this ski in your quiver? Or maybe you actually don’t know and just could not resist buying them ;)
Hey Woods! I found the answer in this thread somewhere in June… that is what you said :

I think the Otto is a no-brainer for me.

I ski mostly consolidated snow.
I love my E99/Gamme but sometimes want more width for manky snow.
The Ingstads excel in softer snow, which is nice but I don't get that all the time.
I really dig 205cm for me, it's the everything length for me.
The Gammes come in a 210 or 200-- but 205 is really where I want them.

I'll get a slightly wider platform, decent camber underfoot, and in a 205 length.

This conversation is over, it's decided.

This is scaring… I should not have read that… there lies all the reason why I should get the Sverdrup… they would take over from my good old Europa 99 that I mostly use for consolidated snow… Is there any end to our endless ski quest? Is there any medication for that addiction? I guess we really need snow to actually go out there and stop writing « nonsense » here 8-)

So you need to flatten the Ottos out in a turn. I can't find a size chart for them. I wonder it that means sticking with reccomended weights for the Nansen, which seem pretty short?

On the norwagien page it is a size chart for the ottos. Asnes gave the same recomended weights as nansen for the ottos

Well, yes, if someone wants to turn the ski via bending it, but then they are going to lose most of the kick and glide capability of the ski. The discerning skier has to choose which they want to prioritize. Rocker will aid the ski in turning it via schmearability, and some stiff camber underfoot will aid the ski in retaining K&G. So in theory this ski, the Otto, is going to be a 50/50 ski. We'll see how that pans out.

I can turn my 200cm Gammes just fine (ask Reil) even though I should solidly be in a 190cm ski via the weight recs. Good technique and the rocker up front helps. The 210's... not so much. There is no way in hell I'm going to ski a 190 Gamme, I'll get shitty K&G on a ski which is stiff underfoot and still won't bend as nicely as a Nansen, for example. (And even that ski, I'm skiing the longest length available, because I want it as a K&G ski, not as a turning ski-- If I want to go turn down something I'm going with my FT62's or a shorter Ingstad)

If someone wants a ski to make turns in, get an actual ski. If someone wants to have a XC ski with some turning capability understanding there are limitations, then start looking at the Ingstad/Nansen/Otto, etc.

There are no hard and fast rules.

Martin,
Do you think there is a big difference between my red/white FT 62 in 189 cm and the 196 cm Xplore? I mean someone has to test these new skis out.
I think, from what I saw in the store, that there is a good difference in camber and stiffness with the green and white that I have. I would not mind volunteer to try them if you chip in to buy them 8-) .

Seriously, what I saw and felt is what Crister wrote about them in other threads. I don’t know if that resulted in a heavier ski but I think that would not be a bad thing especially if you use them in resort like you do. I also think they will be faster in rolling terrain. But the jury is still out!
@Woodserson

Too much peer pressure and GAS. I’ll let you guys know how they compare to the first generation in about 10 days.

VERY cool! Looking forward to a review of the new FT62!!
Cross-country AND down-hill skiing in the backcountry.
Unashamed to be a "cross-country type" and love skiing down-hill.

You are in Norway. You are 100% suspect.
