Ski base cleaner formula

I have a somewhat related question to this thread. When changing between kick waxes of the day, do you have to completely clean off the last layer with base cleaner? For instance, if I used Swix green on one tour and then blue on the next excursion, how much of the green do I really need to remove? So far, I have just been scraping the previous layer off with a red beveled scraper. However, so little wax shows up on the scraper--just a tiny sliver--and I wonder if it is even doing anything. At that point I just cork in the new wax. However, is it better to remove the last layer with base cleaner? Thanks!

Just scrape as much of the old wax as you can remove easily, and use a cork or syntho cork, or scotchbrite buff pad on the old wax--then apply the blue. If you have the time, face the cleaned bases away from the sun so they will cool off. It will help when applying the softer wax if it is warmed slightly--while you're scraping off the green wax, keep the blue wax in an inner pocket in your clothing, or warm it inside your gloves if there's any room --probably not with full tubes, but partial tubes will fit--and then apply to the bases and buff if needed.

I personally don’t bother scraping colder wax at all. If I had green on yesterday. I give it a try today and it slips, I just put a couple of layers of blue on top. Now if I have red/silver on and temperature dropped, I will scrape the red/silver. Funny thing is I want my skis cold to scrape red/silver, it’s too gooey to scrape warm.
I’m not saying what I do is better. It works for me. However FGD has been at this a long time, maybe he has had experiences that have him do things a certain way.

If ya get too many wax layers on your bases they'll potentially cause some drag in the tracks! That's why I scrape off the old stuff, even if it's a colder wax. I'm that guy you ski past while I'm standing just off the trail, scraping, waxing.

I read on the Blue House Skis website(totally recommend it, by the way, it's my favorite ski-related platform) that Dakine Supertune Base Cleaner and Swix Citrus Cleaner are the two best ones on the market. I even read the pros and cons and still don't know which one to buy. I haven't tried any of them, but what I've used, though, was the Oneballjay Citrus Base Cleaner(most of the best ones contain citrus, so you should try them out), and it did the job well. I used it as a beginner, but now that I'm a bit more experienced, I'm willing to try smth new. Anyways, I hope you'll find one you like!!

I am happy with Goo Gone, available in building supply, paint, and hardware shops across the USA. Citrus based and relatively cheap. It works on klister after scraping with baby powder, for a final cleaning, works on multiple layers of warm and cold kick waxes. Works on paraffin used for summer storage wax. Did I mention it’s cheap, no need to skimp!
