1. A good workman doesn't blame his tools.
2. We're fresh out of good workmen around here!
I spent a fair amount of time wondering why I got rid of my Armada JJ's because 116+ underfoot would have been mighty nice!

I found a new type of skiing that I'm not good at.
So... how many more weeks of winter does that portend?

It’s been a rough snow year in the upper Midwest, but my TN66s are right at home on the frozen lakes here in Madison

@Stephen (Mr Orange) Meetup with @Tom M (Mr Blue) on 2/24/2023
The choice for the day's outing, Mr. Orange Voile Hyper V6, NTN Meidjo, Mr. Blue Voile Hyper V6, 75 mm Switchback X2
Today's plan, to reload and ski the same route with Xplore / Free
The best snow in Idaho might just be in Wyoming.

Re: Pictures, pictures and pictures!
First time skinning up at a resort when lifts aren't running. We got 5" new yesterday by me, doesn't appear they got that much an hour away, or perhaps most came yesterday while lifts still running. Anyway this is my new favorite--you get more runs using a lift, but skiing up isn't that much longer, plus way more relaxed and enjoyable and the dog gets out and no crowds. So much fun.
Used 45 or 50mm x-skins, they didnt work well when black became steep and had to traverse zig zag up. They could go straight up greens which was nice till it got warm and wet. Will get nylon ones at some point.
680ft vert not much but good for here and a handful of laps first time. Next time maybe give dog a rest in truck and go solo then get him again when he's refreshed.
I wanted to shoot video but I think setting phone up on top of pack and starting to record then skiing up and skiing down may be a bit much, especially as it's going right into sun. Enjoying the greens--I can get down blues and even blacks now with under 2months experience but sticking with greens enables me to focus solely on form and getting on edge and carving and gradually picking up speed so I feel comfortable doing it right. Gotta walk before you run.
As for dog, most runs he stayed out of the way which made me think maybe the edgeless skis arent needed--but one instance he was already ahead of me and darted across--given openness of run I could react and turn and likely avoid an altercation even with razorsharp edges; but if that happened in woods or where I couldnt react as quickly? 11 year old aint learning new tricks so glad I have some edgeless skis. Next dog will get trained such that maybe they arent needed.

What's the uphill access policy thereabouts?mca80 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2023 4:51 pmAs for dog, most runs he stayed out of the way which made me think maybe the edgeless skis arent needed--but one instance he was already ahead of me and darted across--given openness of run I could react and turn and likely avoid an altercation even with razorsharp edges; but if that happened in woods or where I couldnt react as quickly? 11 year old aint learning new tricks so glad I have some edgeless skis. In Colorado it ranges from:
- free when lifts are closed
- free with season pass
- free with partner resort pass
- $20 season uphill pass
- $80+ season uphill pass
- $20 uphill pass, day passes only and no season passes
- no uphill access at all, even when lifts are closed, even when there's snow and the resort is closed
Gripes with some of the restrictive ones as they are on USFS land.
Nice thought on edgeless for dog. Ever try dog booties to avoid ice between his pads? Is he good with sit-stay-come that you might be able to habituate him via sit/stay, ski a turn, come, repeat, then a few more turns, etc. so he picks up on tailing behind you? Alternatively, get him to lead farther downhill? I've not skied with a dog, but I have bicycled and even motorcycled (tankbag) and scootered (floorboard).
