Wearing a helmet has certainly reduced my brain injuries.

The only time I wear a helmet is when when I do quad roller skating...

I agree that wearing good quality branded ski clothing can actually help in preventing ski injuries upto certain extent. Make sure that you have comfortable clothes & accessories which fit you properly. Check this website which has amazing collection of branded ski clothing.

But Johnny, why do you wear a brain bucket only when you slide in fruit boots ?
The arguments about bashing your head on hard surfaces are basically close to the same fruit boots or ski boots.
We ski in trees so much that I almost never go without a helmet..It's not just the threat of ramming a tree with my head that concerns me; there are also very very sharp limbs that can easily piece the head or poke an eye ( I also use goggles also almost always in the trees ..)
At Hood a few weeks ago, people were ripping around in very close quarters -- sketchy snow, long warm summer etc --
and most WITH helmets..I was thinking "I want my damned helmet ; no one is bashimg my head at 45mph with their god-damned helmet!!!"...Brutal consequences!
BTW, I hate helmets in the warm spring snow and sun!
Also, making the "debate" singularly about brain injuries really misses the mark...

I never hit my head on anything. Trust me, the trees are TIGHT here. You'll never see me with a helmet in the woods. I hurt my knees, my back, my wrists, my toes, my neck, but never hit my head... (Maybe it's too small? : ) But I keep hitting my head really hard (read: falling) with those stupid quad skates...!

But yeah, goggles are super important... It's funny, I can't ski without goggles at the hill, but in the woods, I'm having so much fun that most of the time I forget about wearing them...! 8-)

(Hey I have internet at home for the first time in six months!!! Wooouh!)

Man, if only we could have that much space between trees here... That would be the ultimate dream...!!

If you look closely, there's actually an old XC trail winding through there to the right in the first pic..
You can cross it about 4x going down, but if you cross more you have gone right too far..
You will pay! You have crossed over St Regis Pass and it's a bit of work getting back..
It crosses that ridge seen below..
BTW, there's a trail running all the way up the spine, for those with adventure.. :D
