Alfa Skaget Xplore boot disintegrate

Post by Bcskier44 » Sun Dec 10, 2023 11:04 am

Has anyone else seen this happen? Luckily, REI is replacing them without any hassle. I have emailed Alfa directly, but they have yet to respond. This happened after two uses and a total of maybe 17 miles.

Hey @Bcskier44 How did this go down? Were you skiing and the boot released?

Was this both boots or just one? Looks like something was rubbing or chewing away at the sole under the pins.

They didn’t release luckily. The pins still function. It was just the rubber around them that fell apart.

Both boots have the same damage. I had the same thought you did but I can’t see anything out of sorts on the binding that would chew it apart like this.

17 miles? That kind of damage for a couple day's use just doesn't seem possible. Please post back after you have skied your new Skagets a few times. Is it possible that you might have stepped into a petroleum product spill at a gas station when filling up your car? Just wondering if a chemical exposure softened up the sole. The wear near the pins looks like it was exposed to a grinding force. In my mind I just can envision that type of destruction from skiing so few miles, maybe riding a motorcycle and dragging one's feet while wearing the boots? :o

It does look as if there was a fair amount of abrading happening on the whole front of the sole.

I completely agree! I can assure you I didn’t step in the vat of toxic sludge that Tim Burton’s Twoface did back in the 90’s. I also didn’t wear them while riding a Harley and dragging my feet along the highway. I’m at a loss that this happened so quickly. I have emailed Alfa directly. I’ll be curious to see what their response will be.

Agreed. I spent some time clipping them in and out and moving the boot trying to see if something was wrong. Everything looks right with the binding. It’s crazy this happened so quickly.

@bcskier

Can you post a side picture? I’m curious if it is possible to see the pin placement in the sole. As if the pins weren’t placed correctly in the mold when it was manufactured.
