Re: DIY pattern base
Pattern reminds me of a Japanese ski called Jieitai… see halfway down this post

Re: DIY pattern base
My venture down this track was driven by a dislike of the aggressive factory pattern bases.
An XC gear retailer in my neck of the woods takes a different tack: he fills in some of the pattern base and then grinds it down flush with the edges.
Most factory patterns seem to me to be somewhat positive. But I remember a Fischer pattern that was dubbed something like 'turning crown' in which a pattern was ground in the base. So that was negative. I liked that a lot; think it was on my Fischer Boundless. But it was of course less than stellar on an icy surface.
My DIY bases aren't the best on ice either but that doesn't bother me. If needed I whack on kicker skins or walk. In a no-fall zone I walk with boot crampons.

Yeah, it’s about whatever works for the skier.
Rossignol pattern isn’t as aggressive as Fischer. Asnes is the same by all accounts never skied Asnes scales). Skied both Rossi and Fischer patterns. Likes, dislikes totally dependent on the snow. Am a wax guy by nature though, even though that’s a game that can get tricky in the spring.
Skis are tools. They all work more or less. The fun is figuring out how to get the most out of a ski or a small quiver. Like a solid golf game with 3-4 clubs.

Yes, it's a matter of trade-offs.
An optimal choice depends on a good deal of knowledge.

I’m contemplating doing this to my Rossi BC120’s. Some days I’m kinda off on the wax and could use a bit of assist. Skins for what I do get kinda tedious.

Hey, @Ziggy…
Found one of your threads on the Ski forum.
https://www.ski.com.au/xf/threads/diy-p ... ase.79270/
The discussion touched on the similarities between your mod and a pattern used by the Swallow Ski Company of Japan. Added this data point to the Military Ski database because it suggests a possible origin of the “Jieitai” ski used by the Japanese Ground Self Defense Force.

You’re midway through winter in the Southern Hemisphere. How’s the pattern working out on the trail… wet snow, dry snow, compressed surface, ice etc.?
