Kinda need to see the place and people, but a brief outline: Small town (pop. around 1600) on the border of VT and Quebec. Once a prosperous industrial town, now a severely depressed, depressing, redneck (severely so), Appalachia of the North town; emply buildings on the Main Street, noted for subsidized welfare housing, notably of registered sex offenders. Lots of junkies, lots of crime. Quite slummy.
To be fair, outside of the "downtown", there's some very beautiful land within the township, and some good folks in it.

Sounds just like the rust belt… only smaller.

The deadbeats probably like Richford just they way it is right now… crims running the town. Will lament the loss of “their” community when order is restored and families and business moves back onto Main Street.

This was a great message board once.

It can be great again… just need to bury the trash and give it time for the stench to dissipate.

I was reading this post and then my neighbor came and we read it together. He said that this post changed his life and touched his heart. I then went and rented a projector in a big field and my entire town read it and it changed their lives too. We all are so grateful.

In skiing, "more control equals more fun. the better you get, the more fun it is" Keep practicing out there you young guys, it just keeps getting better.

Depends who, or what, is in control. When the high tech gear is enabling more _apparent_ control by the user it certainly is providing less freedom and, I would argue, actually less user-control because the user is then dependent upon that tech. That is, to me personally, less fun. I have a blast working on my skills with Nansens and soft leather boots. My personal control will be enhanced with practice and lack of dependence upon the system enabling my belief in control. I really need to try this surfing without bindings at all!

Why not just get good with the gear you're currently using. You can become an expert on light gear, lots of boomers did. My point was that "the better you are, the more fun it gets" regardless of the gear. You've seen the old movies so you know it can be done. You just have to accept that light gear will have a lower speed limit for safe skiing.
