Re: Suggestions for some soft shell pants?
The snow here in NH is rarely very deep, so I've gotten away with wearing what appears to be a slightly improved version of the Summitskin 2 pants:

I believe I have the predecessor of these Mammut ski touring pants. Must be 8 or so years old by now. I don't think about / shop for ski clothing at all. I use what I have depending on the weather (got these as a gift). Must say they have worked out perfect for me - warm, comfortable, and durable (they still look close to new). I almost never wear any other pants when skiing. Plus, they have a mammoth on them. How cool is that? Recommended.Stephen wrote: ↑Sat Jan 23, 2021 11:26 pmI found the Mammut Tatramar to be pretty nice. I’m tall, and that’s one of the few tech pants that is offered in a “long” inseam. Has side vents with mesh to keep snow out, has elastic inner cuff, lots of other features.

No affiliation, just like ‘em.

Wow, so much good feedback. I've read 'em all, and "looked" at the ones that seem like likely candidates; I'm down to just a few that might work, and are actually available. OR, Mammut, Norrona, and Marmot are possibilities. The ones from Varuste look great, however their smallest size, according to their chart, is still to big for skinny little me.
Might have to bite the bullet and order something to try on; I miss having a well equipped shop nearby and could actually fondle stuff and try it on.
For the record, I'm not needing anything in a hurry, I can get by with what I've got for a while. More time to hopefully make a good choice.

If you ever want a cheap, effective pair of softshells, look no further than Champion (or similar brand) from Target:

https://pmags.com/gear-review-c9-target-running-pants
Paul has many articles on finding affordable clothing for many outdoor activities. Of course, these cheap pants often won't have zips or extra features. But my AND1 pants with a light fleece lining work for me. I'm a real baller.
Winter Trekking is also a great website, but unfortunately it looks like it's no longer operational. The Winter Trekker channel on YouTube is still up, which has great guidance for winter layering and camping.

Re: Suggestions for some soft shell pants?
Since the topic of discussion is pants:
I don't always wear suspenders, but when I do I prefer....dos equis ....I prefer the rear suspender attachment is shifted to the sides of the waist band. This does two things: (1) Suspenders keep the pants up, and (2) Side suspenders keep the pants from riding up my couloir every time I bend over to exercise the bindings, pick up the ski poles, etc.
Side suspenders provide a greater degree of mobility and feel sort of "tactical".

No Helly-Hansen admires?

on sale!
I've had a similar H-H pair since the '80s -- "Helly-Tech". Back then I wore Filsen wool pants, so the H-H shells were perfect. I wear them daily in the snowy winter chores, skiing in snowy/windy days, and have taken them winter camping. I use suspenders.

Good taste in skis too, check out dem Combat NATOs! He uses the money he saves on pricey outerwear and invests it in his ski kit, my kind of style. (Good weather? Carhartt Flannel Lined pants. Bad weather? US Army 1946 surplus wool pants with shell zip pant for wet weater)Genoah77 wrote: ↑Mon Jan 25, 2021 8:52 pmIf you ever want a cheap, effective pair of softshells, look no further than Champion (or similar brand) from Target:

Haha Wood, that is correct. Carhartt is great, army surplus wool always cheap and reliable. Just got some surplus wool gloves to replace my holy pair.

I like heavier soft shell pants for tour skiing. Currently, I am using Arcteryx Gamma MX pants. I have the hoody as well, but I find it too warm. I only need gaiters in wet snow. Lundhags make great pants as well.
