It Ain't Ice Unless You Can See Fish
It's that time of year when the temps are low and the skies are sunny (out West anyway). That means it's time for skating the lakes. Right now, it's going off the hook in the west, from the Sierra to Montana. And, as always , in those locales that approach the arctic circle (Alaska, Finland, etc) Whatcha got...any ice in your neck of the woods? For skiers, being able to skate is great insurance for those cold but low snow Decembers. This is from Earthquake Lake near West Yellowstone.

Ice skating is awesome. Anyone here do Nordic blading/ice skating? With the long, flat skates that use an NNN binding on top? I got myself a pair two winters ago but never really had a chance to get out on them except on the local hockey pond with my friends. Hopefully this year is the year I do some longer stuff.

Having grown up in Upstate New York, I joke with people out here in Utah that it's not ice unless you can read a newspaper through it.
But I like your take on it better.

I got some last winter which was cold but very dry here in Oslo. Had a great season skiing on the network of lakes around here, helped to make up for the lack of skiing and was fun to learn a new sport! The skies are not very sunny most days here at 1000 ft. elevation. December is fog season. Even the mountains have been overcast.
I've been skiing in the West Yellowstone area as well(last time in 2013, when I still lived in Louisiana). It's the place to go when they get warm spells in Montana.

Yeah, it was great! Unfortunately those kind of conditions are a bit of a rarity here, more common in Sweden and Finland. Here we tend to get a few weeks of cold weather, then there is too much snow on the lakes for skating.
