Cross-country AND down-hill skiing in the backcountry.
Unashamed to be a "cross-country type" and love skiing down-hill.

Re: Wax it!
Where do I begin and end about grip wax?
My father made me grip wax my own skis from a very early age.
Grip wax is magic. Traction and glide all rolled into one.
Waxable skis with grip wax perform so much differently than their waxless counterparts, that they seem a different ski altogether.
Now- I would never go without waxless skis when the conditions make them ideal.
With appropriate use of grip wax I get higher performance than waxless in every dimension- glide, kick and climb!
I tend to put on thin layers (I have stopped using a binder wax/klister)- and liberally extend the grip wax forward of the wax pocket/kick zone- when I need the extra traction.
I also use grip wax forward of the traction zone on my waxless skis when needed.

You can get the Start wax at Lacordee now (thanks to Yeti). They introduced it this winter with Asnes (They must have been reading my posts here last year! )lilcliffy wrote:Where are you getting the Rex waxes from Ben?bgregoire wrote:Rex has a nice line. their universal is AMAZING.

Re: Wax it!
Sooo yesterday put on Red @ 32o......Few days back at @ 34o the wax worked to perfection and in between put blue over it for decent skiing....took off and stopped....oh-oh.....the skis broke lose on some slight downhills but I scraped at Dead Moose Pond.....took off and got NO glide...ugrrggg.....went up hill to Telecamp a two mile slog....Scraped and was on two slick wicked sliding skis...up was a disaster....but did anyway....down was fast but could get into the crust at times....overall a good series of s turns....Fixed the pipe in telecamp and repaired the stove with Teleking, Snowhoe Donny and Telekid....Kielbasa? krout bacon, mustard onions peppers, and bread....Decent....Rocket ride down but the gentle up was a sweat inducing horror....Ah.... did not do well with the wax yesterday and should have taken the bones...oh well...TM

Re: Wax it!
Tman your commitment to wax is admirable, I must have put a quarter-tin of red/silver on the other day to get enough traction.
Aker's has the Rex pine tar wax and it's less than Swix….if the universal can truly replace all the way from Swix Green to Violet that would be cool:

(I am here to post on this very important thread)
I have much to review and study in the wax dept.
Meanwhile, I am also thrilled to learn that it has become popular among the ladies.

Are we talking about the same kind of waxing here?

I'm a waxman indeed! I have no formal education in it tho!bgregoire wrote:I'm really digging this resurgence of interest in waxable XCD skis that's going on here @ TTalk!
Wet snow in the 40's last weekend required lots of Swix Red on my Glittertinds. They climbed well and the kick was fine all the way to T-lake in the Adirondacks. I like kick above all.
I came back for another try this weekend and skied my Outtabounds since we had a melt freeze. No wax needed while skiing my crusty old tracks until 2pm when it hit 45 degrees. Crayoned on the Swix Red again and climbed like a goat.
Waxing is alchemy, I love it! And leaves are excellent for the final climb to the road I've learned! It's all part of the adventure!

Had a hard time with my waxing in the last 24 hours. Plenty of new snow but its all needles and graupels. Would have been better with red as well even though it -8C here!

Where does everybody put the little slivers of aluminum from the Swix tins? I found one stuck to my hat this morning!
