Re: New rant... Backcountry/wide skis and telemarkers
So poo poo my "trendy" wide skis with AT boots/bindings all you want, I will be skinning by 7 am on a wednesday powder day and back to work by 11, saving my precious vacation hours for spring backcountry trips with the exact same skis only lighter boots. I'm certainly not pooh-poohing your skis, I ...

Re: New rant... Backcountry/wide skis and telemarkers
Oh man I feel like this thread describes me (aside from tele skiing). The girlfriend and I just got back from a long weekend resort ski trip to Banff with the Ikon pass. She is queen of the bumps and mellow trees. I enjoy both but also love high speed turns on steep groomers and jump turns on old po...

Re: Voile Objective BC Skis and Super Lite Skins
If you want fail-safe binding repair that will hold unless the ski breaks in half: machine screws and t-nuts. Ski will be trashed but the binding is not coming off unless the ski breaks! How do you make the holes for the screws in the backcountry? Do you carry a drill in your pack? :D They do in Al...

Re: Avalanche
I guess I just see these very long, jargon-filled avy reports and I'm questioning the method. I see a layer of arrogance in there. No "expert" knows everything. Any report over 2-3 sentences long is not going to be very useful to the average person. The truth is that experts often die just as easil...

Re: Pomoca Race Roll
I use Pomoca Climb Pro S-glide skins on my AT setup and the glide is amazing for a 100+mm wide skin. I won't even bother with other companies skins anymore the difference is that big. These race skins are supposedly even better glide so I don't think you will be disappointed. Skimo.com sells skins b...

Re: wax vs. scales (THE KICK)
Totally well known - I started out xc skiing on some old scalies that were too short for me. First few times skiing on wax skis were a shocker for sure until learning to transfer weight completely ski to ski.

Re: lack of grip undermines the entire performance of an XCD ski
Have had the same experience with scales on cold powder in CO many times too. Probably better off with a thin full length skin.

Re: Tele fail
Believe me, there is nothing professional about my skiing! I was out for a ski with two friends - Quandary is an "easy" 14er in winter and can be a good avalanche safe ski in a 25 degree bowl and then along a ridge. Nearby the Breckenridge resort got 12" a day or two earlier so it sounded like good ...

Re: Tele fail
Just a note on helmets - I did CPR for half an hour on a dead 22 year old who took a header into buried rocks on Quandary last month. After reading up on ski helmets I doubt he would be alive with one based on what they are tested for (probably still died from concussion) but it at least would have ...

Re: LilCliffy's Nordic Backcountry Touring Waxing
Awesome thread! Only thing you haven't covered is sticky fresh snow. We get a lot of it in the spring where it snows and the next day is right around freezing. So here is HBS's super secret kick wax tip for fresh sticky snow: Carry a little piece of high-flouro glidewax in your waxing kit. When you ...
