Re: DIY pattern base
Yes, it's a matter of trade-offs.
An optimal choice depends on a good deal of knowledge.

Re: DIY pattern base
My venture down this track was driven by a dislike of the aggressive factory pattern bases. An XC gear retailer in my neck of the woods takes a different tack: he fills in some of the pattern base and then grinds it down flush with the edges. Most factory patterns seem to me to be somewhat positive....

Another comment about routing ... Next time around I'd use a straight bit that was designed to cut at the bottom as well. Can't remember what the tech term is. And regarding hot wax and the scales ... A generous hot wax for storage leaves a bit of wax in some of the scales and it needs scraping out ...

Re: DIY pattern base
I've now had about 20 days on the the Mark 2 base and am happy with how they've performed. Down Under snow is generally firm. The days with a loose top or hail on top weren't the best but they were in a distinct minority. The Majesty has proven to be a pleasing ski - nimble and fun to play with. How...

Re: DIY pattern base - 2nd set
Here's the job on the Majesty Adventures. Differences from Mark I: 1. 1" bit instead of 3/4". Overall this has produced more edge and less void. 2. skis held in a vice maintaining the camber. 1. has given me more edge running across the ski; the voids are crescents rather than semi-circles. 2. avoid...

Then you need boots to match
Wonder how their spring loaded pins will stand up to long approach walks.

Re: Voile TTS Feedback
Haven't tried them but I have confidence in Voile. Interested to hear how you go with them.
Like you the gloss has gone off Lynx for me. Almost lost a ski to a poor pin clip-in.
Needed to add a second spacer on one side after only 2 days.

Re: Which angle for sharpening sides? old Fischer Outtabounds 98 + Boundless88
You'll most likely find the factory angles all over the place and the first thing to do is to see what you've got. Not least because you may have to sacrifice some base. Mark the base edge with a felt tipped pen in say 4 places for 50mm, set your file for 89 degrees and see what happens to the ink a...
