Re: The new Rottefella XPLORE OFFTRACK Binding system

On a skate, note the push button release of the toe bumper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzwcwZ1sN8o&ab_channel=HenrikHugnell Question for someone more in the know ... are the arms of the toe piece metal or plastic? I see a seam in the binding there, but cannot distinguish if it's a matte finish m...

Re: How wide is too wide to skate your skis?

On the right surface, with the right conditions I can skate the Traverse 78 and NNNBC binding ... forget trying to do it on the regular though. Additionally I second the shape factor comments ... and just be sure not to pole plant IN FRONT of your skating ski :) It's a rare treat that you encounter ...

Re: Gear sewing/repair in VT or NH?

Hi Phoenix Was hoping someone would weigh in with a solid lead, but in the absence of that I'll give my 2c These both sound like run of the mill tailoring jobs, as opposed to more technical gear repair like fixing an interior baffle on a down garment or alterations to a tent or bag Have you consulte...

Appreciate the YT thread I'm not an expert and I think I'm gonna look at those videos as well. Here's one from the beginning of the season: that weak lower layer causes some pretty i...

Re: Conditions

Can someone enlighten me about avalanche prone terrain / snow packs? It seems that the west is having a wild time with the avalanche danger and (from the video reports I'm watching after casualties or events) seems to be because of a persistent weak layer of snow close to the ground. Is this layer (...

Re: A Real Wood Heat Thread (No Robots Allowed)

Thats interesting, I had to look it up. We have different varieties of birch here than in North America (mostly silver birch and european white birch, which is a different species from the american one). As there is no hardwood here it is the next best thing. Jotul, Dovre and Trolla stoves were ver...

@joeatomictoad

Unfortunately this is still an issue with today's vacuums
Fortunately the trend for clear plastic dust catchers in vacuums means you at least get a SHOW prior to catastrophic failure.

Re: Building Back Country Skills

Wow, thank you to everyone, I'm grateful to have the wealth of perspective. bauerb My background prior to last season was purely seasonal / recreational touring center XC skate and classic skiing. I'd say I did it mostly to keep up with my partner as she trained for biathlon. For those of you who ar...
