10 normally - these are a tad long for me and the ball of my foot sits back a bit, making them snug (I have a wide foot).

Polyethylene usually requires a flame to prep the surface for bonding.

My overall backcountry strategy is to avoid problems. When I am solo, I do not ski any slope of avalanche potential and avoid tree wells.
