Re: Backcountry ski & boot for New England conditions
riel, You're going to have a blast. The Hoks get better the steeper and deeper it gets. The key to this for me is the single pole, though. I don't ski resorts so don't have much experience with packed snow. lowangle al, I ski my Hoks mostly up skin tracks or up steep untracked stuff that's too steep...

Re: Backcountry ski & boot for New England conditions
I've hiked Greylock quite a bit many years ago including all the BC trails. If you want to explore that stuff, some of it is really steep. Plastic T4's for sure if it were me. The same folks who make the Koms that Lo-Fi posted about make the Hok. If you're a beginner, you can ski all that terrain wi...

Re: Dog Questions
"A splitboarder gal I know accidentally slashed her pup's achilles tendon in the backcountry. Difficult evac, and the dog was never able to walk/run the same after that." Yikes this is sobering. I would feel just horrible. Maybe it's time to detune the edges on my newish M62's. This thread has made...

Re: Unique question (maybe)… Boots, bindings, non-trad ski
THANK YOU for the opinion. I’m starting to lean towards a burly boot/binding set up (like the Scarpa’s you mention) and sticking with these BD “skis.” I figure I got a great deal on them and if I purchase boots/bindings like you recommend I can, at the very least, pull that stuff and put it on “rea...

Re: Unique question (maybe)… Boots, bindings, non-trad ski
I don't know about the skis you are using. I do have Hoks, though. I've skied with very good alpine people on AT gear. In my opinion the Hoks are more fun and allow you to ski more kinds of terrain and tree cover. The steeper, the better. These are definitely not snowshoes though that is a good mark...

Re: Dog Questions
I've heard the same things about metal edges. But, I've never had a problem and Rae loves to run right behind me sometimes running up between my skis when I'm flying down hill (I feel her head-butting me in the ass!) I do, however, carry a roll of vet wrap, some gauze and some quick clot just in cas...

Ski Inc. 2020 by Chris Diamond. https://www.amazon.com/s?k=9780997978421&ref=nb_sb_noss_1 His first book is great, too. I knew Chris when he was GM at Mount Snow. A very readable insider's look at the business model. Day pass pricing is a tool to change behavior - buy an Epic/Ikon pass. I don't thi...
